Happy Sunday lovelies,

It’s finally feeling like fall, friends! Whoop whoop! Are you taking this cooler weather in your stride, perhaps going on walks in the crunching leaves or breaking out your coziest of sweaters? Maybe you’re even sipping a warm latte, wrapped up in a plaid scarf, which leads me on to the topic of this week’s post!

Of all the fall trends that accompany the changing trees and falling leaves, I have to admit that plaid, tartan, or check might be my favorite. With it comes a very British association from things like Burberry’s iconic pattern, traditional Scottish kilts, Vivienne Westwood’s designs, and London punk rockers. Plus, I just love the fact that tartan originated in Scotland and each different pattern represented a different clan. It’s such a cool and interesting start to a pattern’s history unlike any other.

A few years ago, after being inspired by Mad Men’s Betty Draper, I set on a mission to find some plaid high-waisted trousers of my own! Trying to find a pair of tartan trousers back then seemed near impossible, as I guess I was a bit ahead of the trend! Now, thanks to the popularization of shows like Mad Men and the resurgence of 90s classics like Clueless, there seem to be endless plaid pieces in nearly all the high street shops! You could find anything from a plaid pair of heels to a tartan t-shirt!

While a a plaid shirt might be pretty predictable this time of year, I thought trousers were a good unexpected change. To nail the plaid trend this season, I recommend doing the same and looking for the pattern in some unexpected places, rather than what you’d typically go for. Maybe trade your plaid scarf for a plaid blazer or your flannel shirt for a plaid clad bag. Personally, I’m trading my plaid shirt for some plaid trousers instead, but I also have my eye on a tartan bag at Zara and a plaid pair of pumps.
